Who are The Holy Modal Rounders?: An American duo from the Lower East Side of New York City which started in the early 1960s, consisting of Peter Stampfel and Steve Weber.
What do they sound like?: They seem to be always refered to as psych folk, but to be honest I don't hear the psychedelia here at all, maybe it's in there later work. But from what I've heard they seem to be straight up folk, but very very good folk. Think early Bob Dylan with a bit of Old Crow Medicine Show.
What I Thought: To be honest I came across this band the other day by accident, it was just one of those things that you stumble across and are delighted that you did. I don't really know how to describe what makes this group so compelling, but I can't stop listening to them.
There's a few interesting thing about this duo. Both guys are former members of the Fugs, the duo used to include the famous playwright Sam Shepard, and they were the first group to ever use the word psychedelic in a song.
A very good little known folk duo, listen to them. And come on guys please comment your thoughts and some feedback, I feel like i'm talking to myself...And maybe I am.
